Selling Sterling Silver Online

To properly sell sterling silver online requires a good general knowledge of sterling and the ability to perform some easy research. To get the maximum bidding activity on your listing, the potential buyer will need to know certain facts about the silver you are selling. Be sure you know if the item you are selling is sterling silver or silver plate. Sterling is solid silver that is 925/1000 parts silver to other metals. Silver plate is base metal such as brass or copper covered with a thin layer of sterling. Silver plate is almost always much less valuable than sterling silver. If you plan to sell a lot of sterling and silver online then you should invest in a sterling pattern book and a silver hallmark book. Replacements.com is a good online source for determining correct pattern name and confirming correct size of pieces.

Every auction listing must be included:

  • The Makers Name such as Gorham, Towle, International etc.
  • The Pattern Name such as Chantilly, Old Master, Prelude etc.
  • Type of item.. ..Place setting, Fork, Tomato Server, Serving spoon etc.
  • Size of the piece.
  • Clear picture or description of the Hallmarks
  • List any damage such as dents, dings, scratches.
  • Close up picture of the pattern

A true place setting will include: dinner fork, dinner knife, salad fork and teaspoon.

There are also luncheon place settings which includes smaller knives & forks. Another special set is the dessert set which could be a spoon/ knife set or a fork/knife set or all three in a set. A very desirable set would be the Fish Set. This will include a fish fork and fish knife. The large fish knife & fork would be called the Master Fish Set and it is used for serving fish. The knife is typically shaped like a sword and the fork usually has two of the four tines cut but not always.

Grouping pieces for resell is also very important online. If you have a full service for 8, 10 or 12 plus serving pieces, it is sometimes better to sell them as a compete set. Selling in one auction as a complete set is the easiest and least expensive way to list silver online. However, sometimes you can make more money by breaking up the set. You will have to research past auctions to determine which auction method is best for your particular set. If you have a set of sterling that is incomplete or just pieces of a set then it best to sell items one at a time or in related groups.

General grouping guidelines when not selling as a complete set:

  • Try to sell individual piece in place settings.
  • If complete place setting not available, break into related groups.Sell four forks together, four knives etc.
  • Try to sell in multiples of 4, since that is how many people like to buy their sterling, four place settings, 8 place settings.
  • Most serving pieces should be sold alone or in small groups since serving pieces are the most valuable pieces in the set.
  • All hollowware should be sold alone in separate auction listings.

General Information about Hallmarks.

  • Almost all American silver has the word ?sterling? or ?925?. Some early American sterling is not marked.? Old Russian silver will have ?84? or ?.84? and usually a profile of a head.
  • The English have the best method for determining age and quality of silver. English sterling will always have a passant lion. English sterling will always have at least three hallmarks but as many as five. The lion, the city mark which will be an anchor, a leopard head or a castle and the date mark which is always a letter. The fourth mark is usually the maker?s mark or duty mark.
  • The Swedish mark for sterling is 3 crowns.
  • The modern Germany mark for sterling is the Crown & Moon.
  • If you are going to deal with sterling made outside the United States you must obtain a reference book on international silver hallmarks.
